about

Recorded between October 1980 and February 1981, "Passion & Allegory" was an ambitious project for a couple of fledgling artists with almost no budget. Put on 4-track analogue tape in a funky basement studio by Craig Imm, often in finger-numbing cold and with little time to do retakes - that we came out with anything listenable is almost miraculous. We would arrive by public transit bringing as many instruments as we could carry, and left in the cold dark winter night to catch one of the last busses back to our shared quarters across town, wondering whether what we recorded was worthwhile. At times the studio room was so cold it was nearly impossible to tune the instruments - or to keep them in tune. Once the project was completed we only made a handful of cassettes to share - maybe fewer than 20, so this is a rarely heard item. Jamie Haggerty spent a lot of time working to make this sound as good as possible, with the tapes being just over 40 years old and having been stored in less-than-ideal conditions. An archival listening experience to be sure, proceed with no expectations. Some of the material recorded for "Passion & Allegory" was performed by Daniel and Jamie in their band "Continuum" around 1981-82 regularly, and a few of these pieces have been re-recorded and performed by Saturnalia Trio in recent years, showing that there is some longevity in the material.
