about

If you want to know where it's at, ask the young people of today. You know who I mean: the beautiful people who come out at night in the hotspots of the world. They've seen it all, they're impressed by nothing. Been there, done that. But from Moscow to Madrid, New York to Johannesburg, Prague to Portland, they'll tell you the same thing: You can't argue with a good beat. Daniel Crommie understands this, and so much more.
Daniel Crommie (or "El Americano," as he is called here in Caracas) is fluent in the language of the beat - that second international language that's spoken so often as a prelude to the first. But don't take my word for it - turn down the lights, turn up the volume, and listen for yourself.

Psst, wanna get excited?

You gotta love the way Portland musician Daniel Crommie extols the techno throb of his CD on New Weave records: “What could be more exciting than the face of that special someone as they groove along to ‘When Wendy Was Walter’?”

The misunderstood story of When Wendy Was Walter: released 20 years ago, When Wendy Was Walter stands as the most enigmatic album I’ve put out (so far…), despite having a few champions of “The Beat Experiments” - many people either find this artistic statement not “tuneful” enough, too repetitious or simply something they would rather run at full gallop away from. A collection of experimental beat-driven pieces recorded mostly between 1995-1997 (with several dating back as far as 1986) direct-to-digital stereo without overdubs - the title was a punny reference to another electronic music pioneer Walter/Wendy Carlos (of “Switched-On Bach” fame). I received a phone call from Wendy’s New England Digital (record label) head shortly after the release of WWWW asking if there were any references or salacious innuendo to Wendy/Walter, and after reassurance that I meant no disrespect and that there are no lyrics - therefore no direct references, he seemed satisfied that he wouldn’t have to take legal action against me. No lyrics, no vocals - aside from some processed radio chatter and sampled/spoken bits here & there. Synthesizers, programmed drum beats, sequences and virtually NO FLUTE! Accomplices on this mission were a few musician friends who contributed their own unique footprints by “remixing” (actually editing and processing) some of the tracks - and Neil McKamey, who created one of my very favorite CD/cassette packages ever. Beautifully colorful and modern design-wise, even the cassettes have their own character: a variety of colored-foil shell variations that pop out - very eye-catching. To say the album was not a hit is an understatement - however, it is not my poorest-selling album, that remains a tie with a few others. A few people have recognized, understood and appreciated the humor and energy, yet it still evades radar detection.
